This may sound like a good idea, but unless the friend or the family member is going along to help you with your claims, its best to leave them at home. A good friend of mine that has been in the business for well over 35 years said it best.” The public's perception of our job is considerably different than the reality.”
Claim adjusting is not a Monday thru Friday 9-5 job...it's 7 days a week and the work day does not end when you come in from the day's inspections. You still have paperwork to complete, diaries to enter, calls to return, etc.
Family members and friends will not understand the amount of time that you will have to devote to this job and this will cause a lot of tension especially for YOU.
In the adjusters world time really is money. The more claims you do and complete the more money you will make and the only way to do that is to steadily work. If you have too many distractions the slower you will be.
To be successful you have to be focused and cannot have these distractions. Remember most events that you will work will be short term 4-6 weeks...the exception will be if you work a hurricane. If you are going be out for 3 months or longer you can plan for the family or friend to visit you where you are working.
The good thing about planning a visit is that it gives you time to get caught up on your inspections and paperwork ahead of time so that you can spend some extra time with them, however you need to also explain that you are still working, and that if a problem comes up or the office calls with a Hot claim that you will have to handle that first.
